19.06.2013: Michelle OBAMA visited former death strip of the Berlin Wall

Michelle OBAMA, United States First Lady, on June, 19th together with doughters Malia and Sasha visited The Berlin Wall Memorial – the central memorial site of German division, located at the historic site on Bernauer Strasse.

Manfred FISCHER, chairman of charitable association FriedensBrot e.V. (PeaceBread), shared his experiences and consequences of the Cold War, the setting up of the Wall, and the German reunification and reconciliation.

Since the Wall came down, the parish of the Chapel of Reconciliation at Bernauer Straße has made life flourish again on the former death strip. The chapel is surrounded by two rye fields, where now rye is grown for the European peace-bread project.

The Association PeaceBread

The non-profit association PeaceBread based in Berlin was created according to its statutes to

highlight and make a contribution to the reciprocal connection between peace keeping in Europe and the world and sustainable agriculture,
contribute to the commemoration of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain in Europe in 1989 and to refer to the new possibilities that were created by universal peace in Europe,
include partners from countries that joined the European Union after 1989 or have a membership prospect and therefore promote peace and the understanding between nations.

The members and the managing office of the Association PeaceBread are doing this on a honorary basis. The association acts independently in matters of organization and content
