Rakičan near Murska Sobota: “PeaceBread” rye also sown in Slovenian soil

“Seeding of the rye took place on Thursday, 10 October 2013, on the field of the school. In addition to Borellus, we have sown five more varieties which are grown in Slovenia.”

On Tuesday, 15 October 2013, the Slovenian Minister of Agriculture, Dejan ŽIDAN, the German Ambassador to Slovenia, Dr. Anna Elisabeth PRINZ, the director of the school Štefan SMODIŠ, the mayor Anton ŠTIHEC, the director of the Fund of Agricultural Areas and Forested Land, Irena ŠINKO, and the student Doroteja FARTEK conducted a symbolic seeding of rye on the field of the school.

Background of Rakičan and the Rakičan Biotechnical School

In the north-eastern part of Slovenia, in the Pomurje region (also known as Slovenia’s breadbasket), the village Rakičan is located in close vicinity of the town Murska Sobota. The village lies 188 metres above sea level – geographic latitude 46°39′, geographic longitude 16°11′. Between 1961 and 1990, the average annual temperature reached 9.2 oC, and the annual precipitation amounted to 814 mm. Since 1990, the average annual temperature has risen to 10,2 oC whereas precipitation has sunk to 800 mm. Soils of the area are light to heavy and relatively shallow.

The Rakičan Biotechnical School is located in the Rakičan village, celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Providing the education for agricultural professions, taking care of traditions, developing new expertise and being strongly interlinked with the surrounding area, the school has markedly influenced the identity of the region and its inhabitants throughout these 75 years.

Students are educated in the following professions:

Agricultural technician (4 years)
Horticultural technician (4 years)
Agronomist (3 years)
Farm hand (2 years)

Some of the students continue their education at a college, others look for jobs in the economy or take over their parents’ farms.
Different seminars and conferences for farmers and other experts (wheat day, corn day) are also organised by the school.
