In memory of Prof. Dr. Olaf Christen

Prof. Dr. Olaf Christen, long-term member of the PeaceBread Association has died on February 2nd 2020 after a long and serious illness.

The renowned agricultural scientist who began his scientific career at the Christian- Albrechts University in Kiel held his last office, the professorship for General Crop Production/Ecological Agriculture, at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.

Besides doing active research, Prof. Christen had many other interests and callings. As a political advisor, he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for Agricultural Policies at the German Federal Ministry for Food and Agriculture. In addition to this, the recognised crop production scientist was involved in many scientific and discipline-specific societies like the German Society for Crop Production Science and the German Agricultural Society (DLG).

Prof. Christen supported the PeaceBread Association from the early beginnings as an individual member with the belief that the German reunification and the European integration created new perspectives for agriculture and agricultural research and teaching just as personal perspectives that are worth being preserved and promoted. For this special attachment we thank Prof. Dr. Olaf Christen very much.

Prof. Olaf Christen leaves behind his wife, children as well as the grandchild. We express our deepest condolences to them.

PeaceBread Association

The Association PeaceBread

The non-profit association PeaceBread based in Berlin was created according to its statutes to

  • highlight and make a contribution to the reciprocal connection between peace keeping in Europe and the world and sustainable agriculture,

  • contribute to the commemoration of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain in Europe in 1989 and to refer to the new possibilities that were created by universal peace in Europe,

  • include partners from countries that joined the European Union after 1989 or have a membership prospect and therefore promote peace and the understanding between nations.

The members and the managing office of the Association PeaceBread are doing this on a honorary basis. The association acts independently in matters of organization and content
