PeaceBread rye seeds were sown in Szarvas, Hungary on 3rd of October on the Day of the German Unity

Mihály JANSCÓ, Research Fellow / Research Group Leader in the Irrigation Management and Rice Research Group of Research Institute for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Irrigation (HAKI) in Szarvas – our Hungarian project partner in PeaceBread project – informs about the details of this symbolic day of German Unity:

“Next to the rye variety from Berlin a Hungarian bred rye variety called ‘Varda’ was also sown on this.

The 3rd of October was not only a day of a cereal sowing but a symbolic start of PeaceBread activities in Hungary. A small celebration was held in the Lysimeter Research Station of the Research Institute for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Irrigaion (HAKI). This station is one of the largest in Europe of 1 hectar total soil surface and 320 lysimeters of 1 m2 each.

The HAKI as host of the Hungarian PeaceBread growing invited many local schoolchildren, the major of Szarvas and the local Evangelical dean. The first seeds of PeaceBread rye were put into the soil by the children as new generation.

Mihály BABÁK (65) the major of town Szarvas and member of the Hungarian Parliament has spoken about the importance of agriculture in peace and the importance of the EU in the breaking of borders between nations.

Before the sowing Zsolt LÁZÁR;(40) Evangelical dean and local vicar asked for blessing on rye growing and on the PeaceBread project.

From the HAKI, Dr. Zsigmond JENEY, deputy director responsible for scientific affairs and Mihály JANSCÓ, researcher responsible for PeaceBread Project have spoken about the project details.

The celebration and sowing were noted by many national and local TV and radio channels and websites.”
