Manfred Fischer, priest and highly committed chairman of the Verein Friedensbrot e.V. (association „PeaceBread”), has unexpectedly passed away at the age of 65 on December 6, 2013.
Until his dispensation for retirement, Manfred Fischer was committed to his benedictional tasks at the Parish of Reconciliation at Bernauer Straße for 38 years. He was the promoter of every detail that makes up the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Straße today, and his contribution to Ars Memorative has received worldwide recognition.
His achievements include the cultivation of a rye field on the former death strip at the Chapel of Reconciliation and the baking bread, bread rolls and oblates from the harvested rye.
In 2012, priest Fischer became involved in the idea of a “PeaceBread” and the foundation of the charity association Friedensbrot e.V., (“PeaceBread”) with enthusiastic convincement. Until the very last days, Manfred Fischer contributed to the preparation of a European conference and a ceremonial act “Peace and Agriculture” on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain in Europe, which will take place from September, 29, to October 1, 2014, in Brandenburg and Berlin.
The association Friedensbrot e.V. („PeaceBread“) will keep its chairman Manfred Fischer in grateful memory, and will carry on his work along the path that he has set out.
